Add Gmail Account to Outlook 2016

Adding a Gmail account to Outlook 2016 is quick and easy. The process requires two steps with Google: Enabling IMAP access and creating an app password which allows Outlook to access Gmail. Then a few quick and easy steps in Outlook – and boom Gmail in Outlook.

Google Steps

  1. Log into Gmail
  2. Enable IMAP
    1. Log into your Gmail account
    2. Click the settings Gear icon at the top right > choose Settings
    3. Choose the Forwarding and POP/IMAP section
    4. Under IMAP Access select Enable IMAP
  3. Create an Application Password
    1. If you have Two Step authentication enabled for your Google account
      1. Go to the Google App Password page
      2. Select the app and device you want to generate a password for
    2. If you Don’t have two step authentication enabled
      1. Go to the Google Less Secure Apps page
      2. Enable “Allow less secure apps”

Outlook Steps

  1. Launch Outlook
  2. Go to: File > Account Settings > Account Settings – Add and remove accounts
    1. Email Tab – click New
    2. Type gmail address, click Connect
    3. Enter password generated in step 3, click Connect
  3. Yep, that’s it – done!
  4. You’ll receive a test email as your inbox starts to populate.
