Asus Zenbook – BIOS Setup F2

Problem: The Asus Zenbook UX32VD manual states to press F2 at startup to access the BIOS Setup Utility – this will not work if your computer shipped with Windows 8.  New computers shipping with Windows 8 use UEFI Firmware and the Asus instructions are written for pre Windows 8 legacy hardware that run legacy BIOS systems. These incorrect instructions are on page 25 of the User Manual “If you need to run the BIOS Setup to set or modify the system configuration, press [F2] upon bootup to enter the BIOS Setup.

Solution 1 – Accessing UEFI Firmware on a computer that shipped with Windows 8

  1. Press Windows Key + C  to access the Windows 8 Charms bar
  2. Click Power & choose Restart while holding down the Shift key
  3. In the Boot Options menu choose Troubleshoot
  4. In the Advanced Options menu choose UEFI Firmware Settings
  5. Make changes

Command line method

  1. Launch Command Prompt: Click Start (or Windows key + R) > type CMD > hit enter
  2. At the prompt enter:  shutdown /r /o
    1. /r = full shutdown and restart
    2. /o = restart with Advanced Options menu
  3. Make changes

Solution 2 – accessing BIOS the old way

  1. Power on normally and log into Windows
  2. Reboot Windows
  3. Hold the F2 key down after the computer restarts
  4. Enter the BIOS setup menus

    I’m trying to install windows with UEFI on my UX32VD but my BIOS (last from asus for UX32VD not UX32VDA):
    Version: 214
    Nno GPO version but VBIOS version: 2137.I14UX3.006
    EC version B44U140001
    has no UEFI in the Boot page: I opened an issue to asus… can you suggest me some other things to check?
    I have picture of my bios pages if you want to see it.

  2. @mishak – to move the pagefile to another drive check here, you can set it to 0 for the bad drive and create new on another: Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced system setting > Advanced > Performance Options > Advanced > Virtual memory
    Accessing BIOS – try a cold boot and stab F2 madly hoping to catch the brief moment it may work.

  3. My internal (soldered-on) SSD, formatted as NTFS and contains my pagefile.sys, failed in an interesting manner. I can’t restart windows from the menus or the command line. It simply goes to a black screen forever.

    I need to disable that SSD for the computer to operate properly on the othe 128GB SSD/ I installed. Is there any other method to get into the BIOS/UEFI?
